Scott Guise Obituary: York College Mourns Passing of Director of Athletic Communications
York College is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Scott Guise, longtime Director of Athletic Communications, who served the College with dedication for over 30 years. Scott’s unwavering commitment to Spartan athletics and his genuine care for student-athletes, colleagues, and the broader York College community leaves a lasting legacy.
A Lifetime of Service to York College Athletics
Scott Guise joined York College in 1995 and dedicated the next three decades to telling the story of Spartan athletics. From behind the camera, in the press box, or on the sidelines, Scott ensured every team, every player, and every achievement received the recognition it deserved.
He captured some of York College’s most memorable moments, including the men’s basketball team’s 2005 Final Four run, while never overlooking the small, personal moments that meant so much to student-athletes. Countless players recall his thoughtful gestures, like congratulatory messages after games or check-ins during tough matches, demonstrating a steadfast, quiet, and genuine care for all.
Reflections from Colleagues and Leaders
“Scott’s connection to all things Spartan—especially our student-athletes and staff—extended far beyond his professional role,” said Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation Paul Saikia. “He didn’t just tell our story; he was a part of it. Scott will always hold a special place within York College Athletics.”
Even while facing significant medical challenges in recent years, Scott remained a constant presence at athletic events, whether behind the camera, on a headset, or working on his laptop during treatments. His resilience and dedication were recognized when he was named the 2025 recipient of the Middle Atlantic Conference Giant Steps Award, honoring individuals who inspire others through perseverance and service.
“Scott is a true inspiration,” said Assistant Director of Athletic Communications Derek Behrenshausen. “He displayed immense determination while continuing to serve York College at a high level. His impact will continue to provide strength and inspiration to all who knew him.”
A Lasting Legacy
Scott Guise’s impact extends far beyond the games, statistics, and stories he produced. He was known for his steady kindness, calm leadership, and personal integrity. Colleagues consistently noted his quiet dedication, selfless work ethic, and infectious smile.
“York College’s motto is ‘Servire Est Vivere’ – To Serve is to Live. Scott exemplified this every day,” said Associate Athletic Director Matt Day. “He served York College, our coaches, and our student-athletes in countless ways. Scott’s impact is immeasurable; he was a true Spartan and will be deeply missed.”
Former Women’s Basketball Coach Betsy Witman added, “Scott was the face of York College Athletics that every student-athlete knew and loved. His passion, strength, and courage were unmatched. I will truly miss my friend and coworker of 28 years.”
Director of Communications Julie Loeper shared, “He set a standard the rest of us tried to match. Scott approached every challenge head-on without seeking attention or credit. We are better because we worked with Scott.”
